We all are destined to get older, but this Chinese senior citizen proves that aging doesn’t mean you get weaker. Read on to find out more!
A 76 year old man in Anhui, China is proving that although we must all age, that doesn’t, and shouldn’t prevent us from doing the things we love.
At an age when most people’s idea of a workout is crushing their many pills into their tapioca pudding, Ying Dingguo is more concerned about crushing it in the gym.
The geriatric gym rat started bodybuilding at the tender age of 67. 10 years later he is still going ham at the gym for at least two hours a day… EVERYDAY!
Although Ying took up bodybuilding rather late in the game, he was by no means a stranger to lifting. In 1962 Ying started weight lifting with a coworker friend named Yau. After a few years of training he even won 2nd at the 3rd Provincial Sports Game Weight Lifting Competition in Anhui.
Unfortunately his friend Yau would be transferred to another factory leaving Ying without a lifting partner and thus prematurely ending his lifting days. Instead like many Chinese he would take up other recreational sports such as tai chi, ping pong, and badminton.
Flash forward about three decades later to 2005 when Ying, now a retiree, decided to get back in shape by training in bodybuilding.
Ying’s dedication is short of amazing. The neighborhood he resides in is largely made up of the elderly and retirees like himself. However unlike most of his contemporaries who only break a sweat washing mahjong tiles, Ying adheres to a strict training and diet regimen that would exhaust people even in their 20’s.
Ying trains daily, amassing an impressive 100kg (220 lbs.) bench press, 65 kg (143 lbs.) military press, and easily curls 40kg (88 lbs.). He is even said to do 120 push ups in one minute!
Ying even stays busy participating in local bodybuilding competitions in the senior division, often against competitors that are 10 to even 20 years younger than him. Since 2009 he has placed a respectable 4th, 5th, and 6th place in his division. Although unable to capture an elusive 1st place, Ying feels his rippling and toned physique plus good health is it’s own reward and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
In fact Ying’s ultimate goal is to continue his training even to the age of 100 and beyond!
Here’s to you Ying, one grandpa we definitely will never ask. “Do you even lift brah?”
