Fokai is a brand based out of Guam that uses a lot of Asian characters in their designs. I first noticed their brand after an interview with singer Pia Mia, and her endorsement of the brand led to my further research of their company. They’ve released several interesting hat, shirt, and tank designs.
While not necessarily purely streetwear, Fokai is more of an action sports apparel company. The brand appeals to a lot of MMA fighters and people with similar interests. So if you’re into all that, this is a brand that should definitely appeal to you.
Since it’s inception in Guam, Fokai has now expanded to several different regions across the world and have headquarters in many different cities.
The name “Fokai” is a twist on the spelling of an old Chamoru (Guamanian language) word that differed in meaning between generations. Within our generation as kids, it means “to go for it.” The brand’s message is simple — the conscious effort toward total self Improvement through initiation and perseverance.
Roman Dela Cruz, one of the the founders, cites God and people as the inspiration behind his designs. He says that “Fokai is about everyday people. Anyone on a mission for self improvement. The community-conscious, morally motivated, and proficiency-driven.”
A few years ago, Dela Cruz and the others behind Fokai were looking for a quality action-sports/lifestyle local label to represent Guam. At the time, the island didn’t have anything like that, so they wished to give their people a respectable and global signature in action sports and lifestyle branding.
The line started as a surfing label, but then as their ideas became more concrete, they shifted towards Jiujitsu and Grappling. The brand did it’s official launch at a local MMA event that some relatives were attending and has been growing ever since.
Now that they’ve become decently established, their main goals are to continue producing amazing products and keep increasing the quality of their products.
