China is banning hot models left and right. Find out the latest expo casualty in these unjust bans!
As we have documented before, China is a big fan of their expos, and even bigger fans of their hot and sexy expo models. Perhaps almost to a fault.
Take the recent plan by ChinaJoy 2015’s, the largest and most influential gaming and digital entertainment expo in Asia, decision to fine expo models between 5,000 RMB-10,000 RMB( $800 to $1600) for showing too much cleavage or posing too provocatively. The ban comes fresh off the heels of the Shanghai Auto Show which also had a similar ban and fines placed on models who were too sexually alluring.
As of now these are just rumors from a leaked document on Weibo that allegedly was created as a dress code and moral conduct guidelines for employees of the upcoming expo. The document was created in the hopes that such rules would help draw attention back to the products instead of scantily clad models, as originally intended for these type of expos.
The event kicks off July 30-August 2. Currently it is unknown how these fines will be enforced but the leaked documents states that models revealing more than 2 centimeters (0.787 inches) of cleavage and models wearing pants that hang only 2 centimeters below the waist will also be fined. One interesting thing to note is that these bans are equal opportunity bans as the document reveals that male models wearing only underwear or pants below the waist will also be fined.
Although netizens have been quick to react to these alleged bans, with some even saying:
“Without breasts, why the hell would anyone go to ChinaJoy?”
These bans may have a point. ChinaJoy has been around since 2003, and although primarily intended for digital and video game entertainment, the expo has hosted events such as “Victoria’s Secret, Enticing Night” (whatever the hell that means) an event that had models wearing skimpy nurse outfits and created internet pseduo celebs like “Breast Phone Girl” a young woman who became famous after pics of her and her cell phone stuck between her breasts became a viral sensation.
However the expo may just have a more pragmatic reason behind their bans. Since 2011 the local government has tried to minimize the amount of provocative models at expos and conventions. They even went so far as to ban models wearing bikinis.
So it seems that ChinaJoy is stuck between a rock and a hard place, either piss off the government or piss off their attendees. What tough times we are living in. Tough times indeed.
