The year is finally over and we’re getting ready for 2013, the year of the snake. 2012 has been an amazing year for Asian Americans. Both Jeremy Lin and “Gangnam Style” have completely changed the world. Can you believe that a Korean language song topped the US billboard charts? I would have never thought it possible.
It looks like Asian Americans are taking over the world quicker than we thought.
February 4, 2012 – Rise of Linsanity
Jeremy Lin is the first notable Asian American basketball player in the world. Lin goes from being the 3rd string point guard to a global phenomenon. In a world where Asians are not seen as athletes, Lin’s rise to stardom will give way to many more inspired Asian American athletes.
February 28, 2012 – Far East Movement releases “Live my Life” with Justin Bieber
Although quiet after their “Like a G6” smash hit, Far East Movement collaborates with arguably the hottest artist of this age – Justin Bieber. Far East Movement was the very first Asian American group to top the box office.
Jul 11, 2012 – Premiere of K-Town reality show
Despite many setbacks and being declined by every network, K-Town finally premieres on the LOUD channel on Youtube. It’s the first reality show to feature all Asians. Do they make Asians look good? No. But they do make us look at least a little bit interesting.
July 15, 2012 – “Gangnam Style” is released
PSY makes his first appearance on this list. Gangnam Style is released, and will quietly go viral.
August 2012 – Gangnam Style goes viral
August is when Gangnam Style went bananas. It tops the Youtube video charts, beating out Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.” People love it and it quickly gains a lot of popularity and views. Hundreds, if not thousands, of parody videos are created.
November 28, 2012 – Premiere of the K-Town Reality Show Season 2
K-Town gets renewed for season 2 and premieres. Drama & hilarity ensue.
December 14, 2012 – Dante Basco & Youtube Star Kevjumba release Hang Loose
It’s arguably the first “real acting” that Kevjumba has ever done. Goes to show how Youtube has possibly changed the world of filmmaking. Along with people like Aziz Ansari, Kevumba is showing that the film world no longer needs the middle man. You can make a film and sell it yourself with YouTube.
December 17, 2012 – Senator Daniel Inouye dies
An unfortunate end to a great Asian American senator. He will be remembered fondly for the many great things he’s done.
December 21, 2012 – Gangnam Style becomes the #1 most viewed video on the Internet
It beats Justin Bieber. PSY is officially the most popular artist in the world after only a few months.
